About

Brett Brumbaugh, MS, OTR/L, CDP

Brett received her master’s degree in counseling from Villanova University, and her master’s degree in occupational therapy from Thomas Jefferson University in 2002. Over the course of her career as an occupational therapist, she has worked with adults with chronic illnesses and diseases, including dementia. Brett is a licensed occupational therapist in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She is certified in Skills2Care®, an evidenced-based treatment for people living with dementia and their caregivers and is a Certified Dementia Specialist.

Brett understands that caregiving can be a challenging and emotional journey. She is committed to providing empathic care, recognizing the unique needs and experiences of each caregiver and their loved ones. Through personalized consultation, Brett equips caregivers with essential skills and strategies that enhance their ability to connect with and support those living with dementia.

Brett’s mission is to bring clarity, confidence, and compassion to caregiving.

Approach

Skills2Care® is a training and support program, developed by researchers at Thomas Jefferson University, designed specifically for care partners of individuals living with dementia. The program focuses on providing care partners with practical skills, knowledge, and strategies to enhance their caregiving abilities.

Skills2Care® is a research-tested occupational therapy program that benefits care partners and people living with dementia. Goals include:

  • Improving well-being and skills of care partners

  • Reducing challenging behaviors that often occur with dementia

  • Slowing decline in daily function of people with dementia

Skills2Care® provides education and strategies for day-to-day care. Topics include:

  • Understanding dementia

  • Reducing challenging behaviors

  • Promoting function

  • Communicating effectively

  • Making the home safer

Skills2Care® helps lessen stress and teaches care partners ways to care for themselves while providing the best care possible.

Explore services

Initial Visit

Brett will meet with you in your home to discuss your concerns and to help prioritize your goals. The initial visit includes a caregiver assessment and home safety assessment to help develop a plan tailored to address your concerns and needs.

Ongoing Consultation & Support

Ongoing visits can be scheduled at your convenience, with options to suit your preference, either in-person, by video, or by telephone. Brett will work with you to identify and implement strategies to address your specific concerns, such as:

  • Agitation

  • Anxiety

  • Boredom, lack of activity engagement 

  • Difficulty with activities of daily living (ADLs) including dressing, toileting, meal preparation, medication management, etc.

  • Distressing beliefs, hallucinations, delusions, or paranoia

  • Incontinence 

  • Pacing or restlessness 

  • Physical or verbal aggression

  • Repeating words, phrases, actions, or questions

  • Resisting care or help (ex. resisting bathing, toileting, medications, etc.)

  • Rummaging or hoarding

  • Wandering in the home or outside of the home

  • Waking up at night 

Resources & Information

Providing resources to care partners is essential for ensuring that you feel supported and empowered in your caregiving roles. Brett can offer information and resources (i.e. local support groups, vendors and professionals), so that you can feel more connected and empowered on their caregiving journey.
